Fund firms are plunging deeper into tangled webs of data in an effort to build models that help forecast — and plan against — quarterly fund outflows.

These sophisticated redemption “scenarios” represent a major step forward as companies seek a clearer budget picture and wish to assess the effectiveness of their sales training and marketing materials, consultants say.

“It’s sort of been the elephant in the room that everyone focuses on the new money coming in, but not too much [time is spent] on why’s it leaving,” says Frank Coates, CEO and co-founder of Wheelhouse Analytics, a West Chester, Pa.-based consulting firm.
